partnership
with twin cities habitiat for humanity
MEI’s Partnership with Twin
Cities Habitat for Humanity (Habitat) was an effort to
create homes using proven, practical, and affordable green
building methods. MEI’s partnership with Habitat
began ten years ago with a joint project to redevelop
urban sites throughout the metro area. MEI helped Habitat
assess their building practices, with the goal of increasing
the sustainability of all future Habitat construction.
A demonstration house:
Green building methods adopted by
Habitat and MEI were showcased in a demonstration house,
to be built in Crystal during 2008. The demonstration
house used recycled materials and locally produced products,
and included features such as low flow water fixtures,
permeable pavement, energy star appliances, and solar
hot water. The house’s most successful features
that do not reduce the affordability or volunteer friendliness
of Habitat construction will be included in all future
Habitat homes.
