Mercury
TMDL Stakeholder process informationThe Minnesota Environmental Initiative
is working with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency to design,
manage, and facilitate a year-long stakeholder process to develop
an implementation plan for the state’s new mercury TMDL.
The implementation plan will include strategies for reducing
mercury releases to air and water from sources in Minnesota,
and will consider specific targets and timelines for mercury
reductions to meet the EPA-approved TMDL.
Over the course of the next year, MEI will engage three groups
of interested stakeholders. The Strategy Work Group, consisting
of 16 major stakeholders, will meet monthly and will be responsible
for identifying mercury reduction strategies, and developing
recommendations for the state's implementation plan. This group
will include representatives from MPCA, mining and power industries,
wastewater treatment, environmental groups and others. A larger
group of stakeholders, the Partners Group, will meet periodically
to represent broader stakeholder interests in the process and
provide feedback on the plan. Near the end of the project, MEI
will also contact other interested parties by sending out a
draft of the mercury reduction strategies electronically to
an even larger audience to solicit feedback on the implementation
plan. Ron Nargang will chair the process and facilitate each
of the stakeholder group meetings. Please see the links below
for meeting schedules, meeting agendas and summaries, as well
as participant rosters.
If you have any questions about this process or would like additional
information, please contact Kabby Jones, director of environmental
projects at MEI at 612-334-3388 ext. 109 or at kjones@mn-ei.org.
